In thoracoscopy, a thin, flexible viewing tube (called a thoracoscope) is inserted through a small incision in the chest. Fiber optic cables permit the surgeon to visually inspect the lungs, mediastinum (the area between the lungs), and pleura (the membrane covering the lungs and lining the chest cavity).

Surgery to remove outer membrane, layer of an organ is called decortications.

Empyema thoracis

Empyema can develop after you have pneumonia.Its symptoms are as follows-

  • Chest pain, which worsens when you breathe in deeply (pleurisy)
  • Dry cough.
  • Excessive sweating, especially night sweats.
  • Fever and chills.
  • General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise).
  • Shortness of breath.

  • An esophagectomy, or esophageal resection, is a type of surgery in which a part of the esophagus or the entire esophagus is removed.
  • The lymph nodes near the esophagus and the stomach may also be removed during this operation.
