Determining the number and spacing of the children is family planning.Purpose of family planning is to prevent birth of unwanted children.

There are different methods of family planning which prevent pregnancy:

  • Barrier method- keeps the sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Hormonal method- Women’s ovary stops making eggs in this case and make harder for the sperm reach the egg
  • IUD’s- Prevents man’s sperm from fertilizing the woman’s egg
  • Natural methods-lets the woman know when she is fertile so that she can avoid sex at that time.
  • Permanent methods- These are the operations which make it impossible for a man/woman to have children.

IUD-Intrauterine Device

This is T shaped birth control device.It is inserted into woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy.

You cannot have this birth control device -

  • 1.If you have pelvic infection.
  • 2.If you feel that you are pregnant.
  • 3.If you have uterus cancer.
  • 4.If you have vaginal bleeding that’s not your period.
  • 5.If you have copper allergy.

Certain care should also be taken when you have placed IUD in your uterus.

- 1. If it slips a little you might get pregnant.

- 2. If you are pregnant while having IUD you should remove IUD immediately.

You should call your doctor when following things happen

  • You feel that IUD is coming downwards through your cervix.
  • If you are having pain and bleeding while having sex.
  • Your vaginal discharge is different than normal.
  • You have bad cramping and soreness in your lower belly.

Family Planning Surgeries

There are Traditional as well Modern methods.

  • Withdrawal
  • Fertility awareness

There are surgical methods as well. Tube ligation is one of its types. If you want permanent solution then surgical methods are suitable.

Modern Methods are -

  • Sterilization
  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • Injections
  • Implants
  • Pills
  • Mechanical methods such as condoms.

Sterilization is the most common method. Men sterilization is called vasectomy. Female sterilization is called tubal ligation.For women sterilization we perform both laparoscopy or open surgeries.

Laparoscopy sterilization This can be done in - Close way, Open way.

Close Surgery

Small incision is made below navel. Through this incision trocar (surgical instrument) is inserted into peritoneum(large membrane in the abdominal cavity that connects and supports internal organs).

Open Surgery

An incision goes through abdominal layers and the peritoneum is entered directly.

Things that are done to prevent women from getting pregnant are contraception.Unwanted pregnancies affect both family and economy

They bring the unwanted financial tension in the home and family comes under burden for an upbringing of children.

They also affect the health of a woman. It brings woman’s health into danger. She may lack the support and the resources to take care of herself and of an unborn baby. Also they might don’t get the safe abortion services which can lead to death or disability.
