What is Appendix Surgery?
This surgery known as Appendectomy is done to cure Appendicitis. In this surgery, appendix is removed using a laparoscopic procedure.
What is Appendicitis?
Appendicitis is an inflammatory condition of the appendix which is a small, tube-shaped pouch-like organ attached to the large intestine at a lower right side of the abdomen.
In this condition, appendix inflates and gets filled with the pus causing pain around a belly button which subsequently spreads to the lower right section of the abdomen.
If untreated Appendicitis could lead to rupture of the appendix or perforated appendix which releases bacteria and other harmful substances into the abdominal cavity. This stage of appendicitis may prove fatal.
What are symptoms of Appendicitis?
The most common symptom is an abdominal pain especially in right lower section.
Pain increases while walking or coughing
Other symptoms include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, inability to pass gas, abdominal swelling, low-grade fever
How Appendix Surgery i.e. Appendectomy is done?
Incisions are done in the abdominal wall.
Through these incisions a special tube viz. cannula is inserted. Through cannula, Carbon Dioxide is pumped into abdomen causing it to inflate. This inflated abdomen gives surgeon clear view of appendix and space to perform surgery.
The surgeon reaches inflated appendix with the real-time images transmitted by Laparoscope. Then the appendix is tied off through stitches and removed through incision.
Finally, the incisions are cleaned, closed and dressed
How longer one needs to stay in the hospital after appendix surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery requires very short hospital stay which may extend to -- days.Full recovery from surgery takes about four to six weeks.
